How to Read an Annual Report
Oct 4, 2026 ยท @Ram
An annual report can look scary. This post breaks it into 10 simple steps, and a short game lets you practise each one. All you need to invest is a little time.
๐ฎ Play first, read later
Annual Report Quest teaches you to read a real report, the DWS Annual Report 2025, one bite-sized chapter at a time. DWS is Deutsche Bank’s asset management company: it invests clients’ money and charges a small fee.

How it works
- 10 chapters, in the same order as the report
- Each chapter: a short chat where Asha asks and Dev explains โ one quick activity (sort, slider, quiz or fill-in) โ a one-line takeaway
- Finish a chapter to unlock the next
- No sign-up, nothing to install. Just invest a little time. Opens in any browser
- Your progress is saved in the browser, so you can stop and come back. Hit Reset to start over

The 10 steps below are the cheat sheet. Each one maps to a chapter in the game, and they work for any company.
1. Snapshot vs movie
- ๐ธ Balance sheet = a snapshot on one day: what the company owns and owes
- ๐ฌ Income statement = a movie over a year: money earned minus money spent = profit
Your bank balance today is a balance sheet. Your salary minus spending this month is an income statement.
๐ก Use the page number printed in the report, not your PDF viewer’s.
๐ฎ Chapter 1
2. Read the scorecard first
The “key figures” page answers four questions in one glance:
| Question | DWS 2025 |
|---|---|
| More business coming in? | โ New money doubled to โฌ51 bn |
| Profit growing? | โ Up ~40% to โฌ1,324 m |
| More efficient? | โ Cost-income ratio down to 58% |
| Shareholders getting more? | โ Dividend up to โฌ3.00 |
๐ฎ Chapter 2
3. EPS, dividend and P/E
Four friends own a shop making โน40,000. Each friend’s share is โน10,000 (EPS). Each takes home โน6,500 (dividend) and leaves the rest in the shop.
P/E = share price รท EPS. For DWS, โฌ56.50 รท โฌ4.64 โ 12: about 12 years of today’s profit per share.
๐ฎ Chapter 3
4. Can you trust it?
- Find the auditor’s opinion. “Unqualified” = clean. DWS got one.
- Check the big owners. Deutsche Bank owns ~79% of DWS.
- Don’t panic at routine news. DWS changing auditors is an EU rule after 10 years.
๐ฎ Chapter 4
5. Check old promises
Compare what management promised with what it delivered. DWS hit 3 of its 4 targets from 2022. A team that keeps promises earns trust for new ones.
๐ CAGR is steady yearly growth with compounding. โน100 โ โน150 in 3 years is 14.5% a year, not 16.7%.
๐ฎ Chapter 5
6. Find the volume number
Every business has one number that drives everything: cars sold, subscribers, loans. For DWS it’s AUM, the client money it manages (โฌ1,085 bn).
โ ๏ธ AUM is clients’ money, not DWS’s.
๐ฎ Chapter 6
7. How does it make money?
DWS earns a fee, like the expense ratio on an Indian mutual fund.
๐ Fee margin 0.25% = about โฌ2.50 a year for every โฌ1,000 managed.
Ask of any business: volume ร price. Is each going up or down?
๐ 1 basis point = 0.01%, so 25 bp = 0.25%.
๐ฎ Chapter 7
8. Follow โฌ100 of revenue
For every โฌ100 DWS earned in 2025:
- โฌ58 โ costs
- โฌ12.50 โ tax
- โฌ29.50 โ profit
The headline: revenue +โฌ390 m, costs only +โฌ17 m.
๐ฎ Chapter 8
9. Paper loss or real loss?
DWS made โฌ928 m profit, yet its equity dipped. Why? A weaker dollar cut โฌ483 m on paper. No cash left, and it reverses if the dollar recovers.
Also remember: profit is not cash. Check the cash flow statement too.
๐ฎ Chapter 9
10. Tell the story in one chain
Client money โฌ1,085 bn
ร fee 0.25% โ fees โ โฌ2.6 bn
+ other income โ revenue โฌ3,155 m
โ costs, tax โ profit โฌ928 m
รท 200 m shares โ EPS โฌ4.64
โ dividend โฌ3.00
If you can write a chain like this, you understand the report.
๐ฎ Chapter 10
โ Your 10-question checklist
- Which is the snapshot and which is the movie?
- Are business, profit, efficiency and payout up or down?
- What are EPS, dividend and P/E?
- Is the audit opinion clean? Who are the big owners?
- Did management keep its promises?
- What’s the volume number, and why did it move?
- How does it earn, and is its price rising or falling?
- Out of โน100 of revenue, how much is profit?
- Which losses are real and which are paper?
- Can I tell the story in one chain?
